
Reflection Meeting on Scientific
Advisory in Latin America
On November 29, over 200 attendees joined the 2nd Annual Meeting of INGSA LAC 2023, where prominent scientists, decision-makers, and experts from civil society came together to address crucial challenges in Latin America and the Caribbean.
INGSA's Vice President of Policies, Soledad Quiróz, opened the event with a welcoming speech, emphasizing the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in informed decision-making. INGSA President Remi Quirion led the first panel with his lecture "Outlook and Challenges of Scientific Advice in a Post-COVID World." Quirion underscored the need to rethink traditional approaches to scientific advice in a post-pandemic context.
During his presentation, Quirion stated, "Science cannot exist in a vacuum. It must be rooted in social and economic reality." He highlighted the importance collaboration among scientists, policymakers, and society at large. Additionally, he
emphasized that evidence-based decision-making is essential, pointing out the need to communicate science clearly and accessibly.
The program continued with academic sessions exploring topics such as government scientific advice, cooperation networks in Latin America and the Caribbean, and parliamentary scientific advice. Experts from various fields shared experiences and perspectives on the effective integration of science into decision-making.
Prominent speakers included Alma Cristal Hernández Mondragón, Carlos Abeledo, Félix Moronta Barrios, Edwin Castellanos, Carolina Santacruz-Pérez, Eduardo Oliver, and Patricia Gadaleta, among others, who provided valuable insights into the challenges and opportunities in scientific advice in the region.
